Balcony decorating ideas for apartments in Cyprus
Good balcony decorating ideas for a Cyprus apartment start with the conditions, not the mood board: strong sun from May to October, wind on higher floors and near the coast, and fine dust that settles on everything. Decorate in layers (floor, walls, light, plants, textiles) and choose pieces you can move, wipe down or carry inside.
This guide is about decor. If you are still working out which table and chairs will fit, start with our small balcony lounge guide.
Start with the floor and walls
The floor is the largest surface on a balcony, so it sets the tone. Most apartment balconies in Cyprus have ceramic or stone-look tiles, often in a colour you didn't choose. An outdoor rug is the quickest balcony floor idea: it covers the tile, feels softer underfoot and marks out a seating zone. Measure the clear floor and leave a strip of tile around the rug, so the door opens freely and water can still run to the drain.
Loose interlocking deck tiles are another common balcony deck idea. They sit on the existing floor and lift out for cleaning. Check that they don't cover the drain or raise the floor at the door threshold.
For balcony wall ideas, keep it simple. A wall in warm white or sand absorbs less heat than a dark one, and a narrow shelf or a row of hooks holds lanterns and small pots without dozens of holes. On a rented balcony, freestanding pieces placed against the wall do the same job without touching the plaster.
Lighting ideas for a balcony
Most balconies have one ceiling or wall light. Fine for finding keys, not for a long evening outside. Add a second layer of light at table and floor level.
- Solar lanterns charge during the day and switch on at dusk. The Decorative Solar Lantern is 15 × 17 × 27 cm, small enough for a bistro table or a corner of the floor.
- A group of lamps in one corner looks calmer than single lights scattered around. The Solar Lamp Set 3 Fiber has pieces up to 20 × 20 × 36 cm.
- A lantern with a handle can move from the table to the floor as the evening goes on.
Solar lamps need direct sun to charge, so on a north-facing balcony, or one deeply shaded by the floor above, expect shorter evenings. Browse outdoor lighting for solar and other options.
Plants and planters
Plants do most of the decorating on a good balcony. In Cyprus, pick plants that cope with heat and dry wind: rosemary, lavender, a small olive, succulents, bougainvillea or jasmine in a large pot. Group them instead of lining them up along the railing. Three pots of different heights in one corner read as a design; ten small pots read as clutter.
Pot size matters more than most people expect, because small pots dry out after a few hours of July sun. A tall pot such as the Flower Pot - Ribbed Cil - Terracotta (D24.5 × 36.5 cm) holds more soil and suits an upright plant. A wider, lower pot such as the Flower Pot - Brush Sfera - Grey (D39.5 × 30 cm) works for herbs or a succulent mix. Use saucers so watering doesn't drip onto the balcony below, and keep heavy pots near the wall, not on the edge of the railing. See the full range of plant pots.
Textiles that survive the sun
Cushions, throws and rugs add colour and comfort, but the Cyprus sun is hard on fabric. A few habits help them last:
- Choose fabrics sold for outdoor use and check the material and care notes on the product page.
- Light and mid tones show fading less than saturated red or navy.
- Store cushions in a box or indoors when you travel and on the windiest days.
- An outdoor rug should be lifted now and then so the tile underneath can dry after watering or mopping.
On a windy upper floor, skip light curtains that flap against the railing. If you want balcony curtain ideas for shade or screening from neighbours, our balcony privacy guide covers screens and partitions.
Modern and cosy balcony styles
The balcony design ideas that look best in photos usually follow one direction and repeat it. Pick one:
- Modern: charcoal or white furniture, grey planters, one or two sculptural plants, warm white light. Few objects, clean lines.
- Cosy: terracotta pots, a patterned rug, cushions in sand and olive, several lanterns at low height.
- Mediterranean: white walls, olive or blue accents, herbs and one large flowering plant.
Limit the palette to three colours, counting the floor. A small table can act as the centrepiece. The Nardi Spritz Table is Ø 60.5 cm and 76.5 cm high, enough for a lantern, a plant and two cups. Many balcony decorating ideas come down to this: one table, one plant, one light, styled with care.
Balcony bedroom and covered balcony ideas
A balcony off the bedroom is mostly used early in the morning and late at night, so it needs less furniture and softer light. One chair, a side table, a plant and a lantern are enough.
A covered balcony, under the slab of the floor above or a fixed awning, gets less direct sun. Textiles fade more slowly there, so cushions can stay out longer. The trade-off is that solar lamps charge less, so a battery or plug-in lantern works better. Before adding any cover or awning to the facade, check your building's rules or the municipality.
FAQ
How do I decorate a rented balcony? Use pieces that need no drilling: freestanding planters, a rug, solar lanterns, cushions and a small table.
How do I stop balcony decor from blowing away? Choose heavier pots, keep light items low and close to the wall, and bring cushions and small decor inside when strong wind is forecast.
What should I add first? A rug and one large plant, then light. Those three change a balcony more than many small objects.
Can I hang planters on the outside of the railing? Many buildings restrict this because of falling objects and water dripping onto lower floors. Check your building's rules, and keep planters on the floor if in doubt.
Ready to put it together? Browse the balcony furniture collection for compact tables and chairs, then add lighting, pots and a rug.
