Styling Idea

Small Balcony Lounge Setup

By Elena Georgiou· Outdoor Design Editor

City balconies in Nicosia and Limassol are often narrow. A round bistro table of about 60 cm, such as the Nardi Step (Ø 60.5 cm), with two compact bistrot chairs like the Nardi Trill Bistrot (52 × 45.5 cm footprint) turns that space into a morning coffee spot without blocking the doorway.

Measure first

  • Keep a clear path to the balcony door.
  • Allow roughly 60 cm behind each chair to sit down comfortably.
  • Note how far the door opens outwards, and where drains, air-conditioning units and laundry racks sit.
  • Measure the depth from the wall to the railing, not just the floor slab: a railing with a ledge takes a few centimetres.

A worked example: on a balcony 120 cm deep, a 60 cm round table against the railing leaves about 60 cm for a chair on one side. Two chairs then sit side by side facing the view, rather than across the table. On a balcony 150 cm deep or more, the chairs can face each other.

Small balcony furniture ideas that save space

  • Choose a table that does two jobs. The Step table can be set at 76.5 cm, bistro height, or at 40 cm as a low coffee table next to a lounge chair.
  • Chairs without armrests take less width. The Trill Bistrot has none, which is why it tucks closer to a small table.
  • Stackable chairs free the balcony when you need to clean it or hang washing.
  • Round tables are easier to walk around in a tight space than square ones, and their edges do not catch hips or bags.
  • Keep floor space clear and use the walls and railing for plants and lights.

Light and easy to move

Both pieces are made of fiberglass resin, so they are easy to lift when you clean the balcony, and the chairs stack when you need the space. The Step table weighs 4.3 kg and slots together without tools; its perforated top lets rain run off. The Trill Bistrot weighs 3.8 kg, has a 45 cm seat height and non-slip feet, and comes in 9 colours. Resin does not rust, so it leaves no marks on tiles after rain.

Shade on a sunny balcony

A south- or west-facing balcony in Cyprus can be too hot to sit on from late morning until sunset in July and August. A small umbrella on a weighted base, an awning or a fabric sail fixed to the wall makes it usable, and so does moving coffee to the early morning. Light colours stay cooler to the touch than dark ones, and the Trill comes in 9 colours to choose from. For more options, see our shade ideas.

Making an outdoor balcony feel like a room

Rooftop and apartment terraces

Roof terraces catch more wind and sun than a balcony. Choose pieces heavy enough not to move, or stack light chairs away when wind is forecast, and check how furniture will reach the roof: lift size and stairs matter. On an apartment terrace, a pair of chairs with a small table, or two lounge modules and a pouf, often fits better than a full set.

Common mistakes

  • Buying a full sofa set for a 1.2 m balcony, so nobody can reach the railing.
  • Dark chairs on a south-facing balcony, which get hot in the afternoon.
  • Leaving light chairs out on a high floor in winter wind.
