Cafe Terrace with Stackable Chairs

Why stackable matters

Stacked chairs take a fraction of the floor space overnight and are faster to bring out in the morning.

On a Cyprus terrace this also protects the furniture. Chairs stacked under a cover or brought inside overnight stay out of dew, dust and wind, and a stack is easy to move when the floor is washed in the morning. A light chair makes the routine realistic: the Nardi Bora Bistrot weighs 3.7 kg, so one member of staff can carry a short stack without strain. What to look for in a terrace chair

• Material: fibreglass-reinforced resin with UV additives, as on the Bora Bistrot, does not rust, needs no painting and wipes clean with soapy water. It copes with strong sun and with the salt air of seafront cafes in Limassol, Larnaca or Paphos.
• Seat height: about 46-47 cm suits a standard 75 cm table. The Bora Bistrot seat is at 46.5 cm.
• Footprint: an armless chair such as the Bora Bistrot (54 × 49 cm) takes less room than an armchair, so more seats fit along a narrow pavement terrace. Where guests stay longer, for brunch or dinner, the Nardi Bora chair with armrests (57 × 58.5 cm) is more comfortable and still stacks.
• Feet: non-slip feet stop chairs sliding on wet tiles and cut the scraping noise on stone.
• Colour: pick a shade you can re-order in a year or two, so new chairs match the old ones. The Bora Bistrot comes in 6 colours.

Small tables, more covers

The Nardi Clip 70 is through-dyed fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene, 75 cm high and 10.7 kg: light enough to regroup, steady enough in use. Because the colour runs right through the material, a scratch does not reveal a different shade underneath. Where you serve full breakfasts or sharing plates, the Clip 80 gives an 80 × 80 cm top in the same style. Planning the layout

1. Measure the usable area, minus the entrance, the path to the door and any space your municipal permit requires you to keep free. 2. Decide on the table mix: mostly tables for two, which push together, plus a few larger tables for groups. 3. Allow room to pull a chair back: about 60 cm behind each seated guest, more where staff pass behind. 4. Keep a clear service route of about 90-120 cm from the door to the far tables. 5. As a rough guide, a terrace with tables for two needs around 1.5-2 m² per guest, aisles included.

Common mistakes

• Buying chairs that look right but do not stack, then running out of storage space in winter.
• Putting very light chairs on an exposed seafront spot with no plan for wind. Stack them and keep them under cover when strong wind is forecast.
• Mixing tables of different heights, so some guests sit too low.
• Ordering exactly the number of seats you need, with no spares for breakage or a busy weekend.

Storage and the off season
