Cafe terrace chairs: weight, stacking, cleaning

Start with what happens at night. If staff clear the terrace every evening, light chairs that stack save the most time. The Corrientes armchair has a painted aluminium frame, textilene seat and rope back, weighs 3.7 kg and is stackable; its cushion covers come off for washing.

For a fully wipe-clean seat with no cushions to collect, polypropylene resin is the simplest choice. The Air armchair (57 × 60 × 81 cm) is listed by the supplier for cafes and restaurants, the Ibiza armchair is moisture and UV resistant and sold for home and professional dining, and the armless Bruna chair is only 49 cm wide, which helps on a narrow pavement. Commercial outdoor tables and the restaurant table plan

For coffee service a compact two-seat table keeps aisles open. For lunch and dinner each restaurant table needs room for plates, glasses and a menu, so tops get larger and the number of covers drops. Measure the terrace, mark doors and the service route, and send us the sketch: we suggest a mix of bistro tables and dining tables that fits. Check that bases sit level on paving and that tops wipe clean between guests.

Shade that stays put

A cafe umbrella stands in the afternoon breeze for hours, so the base matters as much as the canopy. The Deneb umbrella is a 495 × 495 cm square canopy on a central pole, with a black aluminium frame and light grey PVC cover. It pairs with a custom-made 80 × 80 cm concrete base weighing 230 kg, made to order for its umbrella and fitted with heavy-duty wheels so staff can still move it.
