Bar stool height: how to match stools to bar and counter tables

Bar stool height is set by the surface, not by the stool: leave roughly 25-30 cm between the seat and the table top. For a typical outdoor bar table of 105-110 cm that means a seat of about 75-80 cm; for a counter of 90-95 cm, a seat of about 65 cm. Below are the numbers we use when planning pool bars, café counters and terrace high tables in Cyprus.

Bar height vs counter height: the numbers

Outdoors you will meet three working heights. They are typical ranges rather than fixed standards, so always measure the actual surface before choosing seats.

  • Dining table 72-76 cm → chair seat 45-48 cm
  • Counter 90-95 cm → counter stool seat 60-68 cm
  • Bar 102-110 cm → bar stool seat 72-80 cm

The Nardi Clip and Nardi Cube tables are 75-75.5 cm high, which is dining height: they go with ordinary chairs, not stools. The Nardi Piave 70 High Table is 107 cm high, which puts it firmly at bar height. A low outdoor bar built into a pool deck or a kitchen-style counter on a terrace often lands at 90-95 cm, and that is where counter stools belong.

The 25-30 cm rule between seat and table top

The gap between seat and top is what decides comfort. Less than about 25 cm and thighs press against the edge; much more than 30 cm and the table top ends up near chest height. This bar and stool height relationship matters more than any single number.

Two real pairings show how it works. A Nardi Faro Stool has a 76 cm seat, so at the 107 cm Piave table you get a 31 cm gap: slightly generous, fine for drinks, plates and a laptop. The Mini versions of the Faro, Lido, Net and Trill stools have a 65 cm seat, which gives 25-30 cm under a 90-95 cm counter.

Measure from the ground to the top of the surface, and check the frame or apron under the top, because a deep frame eats into knee room. Measure where the stools will actually stand: terrace paving often slopes for drainage. A seat pad adds a few centimetres, so allow for it.

How much space per stool

The Nardi stools in our range are 49-53 cm wide. Along a straight counter, allow about 60-65 cm from the centre of one stool to the centre of the next, so neighbours do not bump elbows. Behind seated guests, keep around 90 cm for people to pass; on a café service route where staff carry trays, more is better.

A square high table of about 70 cm, like the 69 × 69 cm Piave, suits two stools for long evenings or up to four for a quick drink.

Footrests, backs and swivel: what matters outdoors

At a 75 cm seat most adults cannot reach the ground, so a footrest is not optional. Look for one built into the frame at a height where knees sit roughly level with the hips.

A backrest changes how long people stay. For a terrace bar where friends spend the evening, choose a stool with a back. For a busy beach-bar counter with quick turnover, a lower back or backless shape keeps the line clean and lets guests slide on and off.

Swivel mechanisms are pleasant indoors, but sand and sea air get into moving parts. A one-piece fixed frame is simpler to look after outside. Check the material and care notes on each product page.

Weight matters too. The full-height Nardi stools weigh about 4-5 kg, which makes them easy to move, but near the coast it is wise to stack them or bring them in when strong wind is expected.

Stools for café and beach-bar counters

For hospitality, choose bar height stools that stack. The Nardi Faro, Lido, Net, Trill and Doga stools are all stackable, which helps at closing time and during the winter months when a seasonal bar is shut. Keep one seat height along the whole counter so the row looks tidy and every guest sits at the same level.

At a pool bar, guests sit down in wet swimwear, so a moulded seat with no cushion is quick to wipe between guests. For a full fit-out, see our café and restaurant furniture and the ideas in stackable chairs for café terraces and restaurant patio setup.

Quick size table: height of bar stools

  • Bar table 105-110 cm → seat 75-80 cm (Nardi Faro, Lido, Net, Trill: 76 cm; Nardi Doga: 75 cm)
  • Bar table 100-104 cm → seat 70-75 cm
  • Counter 90-95 cm → seat 60-68 cm (Nardi Mini stools: 65 cm)
  • Dining table 72-76 cm → chair seat 45-48 cm
  • Space per stool → 60-65 cm centre to centre

Total stool height is a different figure from seat height. The full-height Nardi stools above measure 97-101.5 cm to the top of the back, while the seat sits at 75-76 cm. Always compare seat height with the table.

FAQ

What height bar stool for a 105 cm bar table? A seat of about 75-80 cm. A Nardi Faro Stool with a 76 cm seat leaves a 29 cm gap, right in the comfortable range.

Is counter height the same as bar height? No. Counter height is usually 90-95 cm and needs a seat of about 65 cm; bar height is 102-110 cm and needs a seat of about 75 cm. A bar stool at a counter leaves too little knee room, and a counter stool at a bar puts the top at chest level.

Can I use bar stools at a 75 cm outdoor table? No. At dining height you need a chair with a seat of about 45-48 cm.

How do I measure seat height? From the ground to the top of the seat, without a cushion. Product pages list both seat height and total height, so compare the seat figure with your table.
