Outdoor bean bag guide: which size and fabric to choose

A bean bag is a soft seat with no frame: a fabric shell filled with small, loose beads that move and settle around your body. In Russian it is sometimes called a "pear chair", in Greek simply a pouf. Outdoor versions look the same but use a cover fabric made for terraces and pools rather than living rooms.

Outdoors you will mostly meet three shapes:

• Armchair-type: a raised back and a seat hollow, closest to a lounge chair.
• Large square or round bag: a flexible seat you can sit up in or sink into.
• Lounger-type: a long, low bag you lie on, used like a soft sunbed.

Bean bag sizes for adults (in cm)

The right bean bag size depends on height and on how you use it. An adult size bean bag should let you sit with your back supported and your feet on the ground, or lie down without your head or feet hanging off. As a rough guide, small "kids" bags around 70-90 cm across feel cramped for most adults; 110-140 cm is where adult seating starts to feel natural.

Waterproof bean bag covers and outdoor fabrics

When people search for a waterproof bean bag, they usually mean a cover that sheds pool splashes and a light shower without soaking through. Outdoor bean bag fabrics are typically woven polyester or similar synthetics with a water-repellent finish. Water runs off the surface, but seams and zips can still let some moisture in, so "waterproof" in practice means "dries quickly", not "can sit in a puddle".

What to look for:

• A removable cover with a zip, so you can wash it or replace it.
• An inner liner that holds the beads when the outer cover is off.
• A tight weave that resists sand and dries fast in the sun.
• Colours that suit strong light: mid tones hide dust and water marks better than very pale or very dark fabric.

Filling: beads, top-ups and weight

Most bean bags are filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS) beads. They are light, so a large bag is easy to carry around the terrace, and they shape themselves to your body. Over months of use the beads compress, the bag gets lower and flatter, and it needs a top-up. Many shops sell refill bags, and some bags are sold without filling so you can fill them on site.

The flip side of a light filling is wind. On an exposed roof terrace or by the coast, an empty-ish bean bag can roll or blow into the pool. Keep it close to a wall or bring it in when the wind picks up.

Bean bags by the pool and on the beach

Bean bags work well as extra poolside seating next to sunbeds: guests can drop into one with wet swimwear, and the low height suits children. Place them on deck, tiles or grass rather than straight on hot stone, and give them shade in the middle of the day; dark fabric in direct July sun gets uncomfortably warm. Bean bag or firm pouf?

• Rinse off chlorine or salt water with fresh water and let the cover dry fully before zipping it up.

• In the long rainy spells of winter, store bags indoors or under cover; the summer season from May to October is when they earn their place outside.
