Outdoor Furniture for a Home by the Sea in Cyprus

Sun, wind, sand and salty air are harder on furniture than a sheltered garden inland. No material is maintenance-free by the sea, so the aim is to choose materials that cope well and to plan a little routine care.

How materials behave near the coast

• Resin and polypropylene (for example the Nardi range): they do not rust or rot. Colours can soften over years of strong sun; rinse off salt and sand.
• Aluminium: it does not rust like steel, but a painted or powder-coated finish can chip, and salt left on the surface can mark it. Rinse regularly.
• Steel parts, screws and fittings: the place where corrosion usually starts. Ask us which fittings a model uses before you order.
• Wood such as teak: handles weather well but turns silver-grey without oil; it needs cleaning and occasional oiling.
• Fabrics and cushions: fade faster in strong sun. Store cushions indoors or in a box when not in use.

Pieces that cope well on a seafront terrace

• Chairs: an all-resin chair has no steel frame to corrode. The Nardi Doga chair is UV-treated fibreglass resin, 5.1 kg, stackable and with non-slip feet. Stacking also helps before a storm: a covered stack is far less likely to blow over than a row of single chairs.

What to check before you buy

• The material in the product characteristics, including the frame and fittings.
• The warranty on the product page and what it covers.
• Weight: light pieces can move in strong wind on an open terrace. Stack or store them when a storm is forecast.

A simple routine

• Rinse with fresh water every couple of weeks in summer, and after windy days.
• Wipe with mild soap and a soft cloth; avoid abrasive pads.

Sand, wind, sun and humidity

• Sand: rinse or brush it off before wiping. Wiping a dry, sandy surface grinds the grains into the finish.
• Wind: an open terrace by the beach catches the afternoon sea breeze and winter storms. Close umbrellas when the wind rises and give them a base heavy enough for the canopy; our umbrella size and base guide explains how to choose.
• Sun: light reflected from the sea and pale paving adds to the direct sun. Mass-coloured resin and solution-dyed fabrics hold their colour longer than painted or printed surfaces, and light colours stay cooler to sit on.
• Humidity: coastal nights are damp, even in summer. Dry cushions before you put them away and store them in a ventilated box rather than a sealed bag.

Common mistakes by the sea

• Choosing on looks alone and finding out later that the frame is painted steel.
• Leaving cushions out overnight, so they never fully dry.
• Skipping the rinse after windy days, when salt and sand settle on every surface.
• Forgetting the screws and fittings of an otherwise sturdy piece.
