Outdoor Furniture in Nicosia

Nicosia is the only large Cypriot city without a seafront, and that changes how its gardens, patios and roof terraces should be furnished. The heat comes first

On the Mesaoria plain, summer afternoons regularly pass 40°C and there is no sea breeze to cool a terrace. Two things follow. Dark seats and metal armrests left in the sun get too hot to touch, so light colours and resin or mesh seats are more comfortable. And shade is not an extra: plan the umbrella at the same time as the furniture. Winters are colder than on the coast, with frosty nights in January, so cushions should be stored and furniture covered from December to February. The upside of an inland city is that there is no salt air, so steel and wood last well with basic care.

Courtyards in the old town

Traditional houses around Laiki Geitonia and Chrysaliniotissa are built around small inner courtyards, often with a lemon tree and stone paving. Space is tight and the walls hold heat into the night. A compact table and two or four stackable chairs leave room to move: the Nardi Net chair is fibreglass resin, 3.9 kg and stackable, and comes in bright colours that lift a stone yard. Suburban gardens and the family patio

Detached houses in Strovolos, Engomi, Aglantzia and Lakatamia usually have a patio by the kitchen and a lawn or gravel garden. This is where the family eats from April to October. For a large group, the Roma teak table is 280 x 100 cm on stainless steel legs. In dry inland heat, teak needs oiling to keep its colour, or it weathers to silver grey. Apartment blocks across the city have roof terraces that bake by day and turn pleasant after sunset. Here a large umbrella does most of the work: the Saturno umbrella, 315 x 295 cm on an aluminium frame, or the Hamel at 300 x 400 cm.
